Danville is unique that the city supplies water, wastewater, gas (natural), and electrical services. Water produced is considered very soft (ranges from 30-50 ppm CaCO3), and has a pH of 7.1. Source of water is the Dan River, with a drainage area of over 2,000 square miles. The City began manufacturing and distributing gas in 1876, and has owned and operated facilities ever since. Danville became the first customer to tap natural gas from the 30-inch pipeline of the Transcontinental Gas Pipeline Corp. The City's gas rates consistently rank below other local distribution companies.
